Every summer I work at a family summer camp where Serpentessa brings her Red-tailed Boa’s for adults and kids to play with. At first, I didn’t know what to think about them. It’s definitely different. But an adventurous spirit took over me and I decided to give it a try.
Not only was it really cool, but for many of us, it was a powerful healing experience. As I integrating the experience for myself, I began to see it through the lens of my yoga-tantra training and practices.
Tantric Frame
Everyone has a response to snakes. Right? It’s primal. But what does it have to do with yoga, tantra or sexuality?
In our culture, the sexual and the spiritual are divided. We’re taught that they are unrelated energies; that sexuality is just hormones and physiology. Sacred sexuality offers ways of healing this cultural split, so that we might know the sacred in our own bodies.
The Mandukyapanishads (a 3000 year old Vedic text) tells us that one doorway back into uniting these energies, is through the ‘Mythical Realm of Consciousness’. It’s a place where we experience embodied power and mystery, that can be harnessed for our life’s passion and purpose. The closest western description of these energies by westerners is when Jungians talk about ‘archetypal’ energy.
Serpentessa
Serpentessa, a 21st century ‘priestess’ (a woman working as a healer with this ‘archetypal’ energy), ‘partners’ with her Red-tailed Boa Constrictors, with various groups, for the healing they might bring.
Two Opportunities
- ‘A Mythical Dance with Snakes’
Sign Up
Oct 14th, 2016: 6:30-11pm – Northampton, MA
Given how disconnection our modern culture is from the natural world, this evening offers an opportunity for the kind of cross-species communication that is rare. We get to commune with the snakes for what it might teach us about ourselves, our bodies and our core nature. We get to drop into timelessness as we learn how to ‘be’ with and move with these primal beings, and to see what the ‘Mythical Realm of Consciousness’ has to teach us.
If you’ve never done it, but have even an inkling of curiosity, give it a try!
2. Snake Massage

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can have a one-on-one snake session with Serpentessa and her snakes. It’s other worldly!
Physical Benefits (borrowed from Serpentessa’s publicity)
“People come to be ‘massaged’ or entwined with snakes for many reasons: stress relief, illness, ADHD, autism, fibromyalgia and enjoyment.
Numerous scientific studies discuss the power of healing touch. Their healing touch releases endorphins and oxytocin, the feel-good hormones that release stress, create pleasure and support you in rejuvenating your body, mind and soul in today’s stressful world.
Not only do the serpents elicit emotional and psychological stress-relief, but blood flow is increased to tense areas, and the gliding weight of the snake relieves pressure throughout a person’s body.”
Testimonials
“I was amazed to see how the serpents knew exactly where I had pain in my body. They went directly there and either lent me their full contact, weight and presence, perfectly molding their bodies to every curve of mine; or they actually squeezed the tension away. I learned that you don’t have to have hands to give a great massage.” ~ RC, Toronto
